JT can be described as a complex character. In what ways might JT be considered "complex." Use your note sheet and text evidence to show one to two ways he is complex.

One complex trait JT has is he has significant interactions with Marlee.

I believe that JT is a complex character because he has different sides to his personality. Evidence of this can be found on pg.209, ¨...JT glanced at me then at his brother..."this shows JT being unsure what to do showing differences in his personality. Another way he is a complex character is that he has significant interactions with other characters. this is demonstrated on pg.230 when he reveals to Marlee that Red hit him.

JT from Lorl I agree is a complex character. Some of the reasons I agree about this is one: The changes he experiences occur because of his actions earlier in the story. When HE was egging the house, Curtis(I didn't spell that right I know) got arrested instead. Hopefully this gives him some understanding of who he really is; a meanie!

I think something that shows how J.T. is a complex character is that he moves the plot along by following Marlee to the forest, finding dynamite, and threatening to blow up Liz's house. This moves the plot along because on page number 211 it says, "you've gotten yourself into a great deal of trouble." This shows that he is moving the plot along because if she is in a great deal of trouble it shows that it will cause conflict later on. Another way I know that J.T. is a complex character is that he has a full range of emotions. I know this because on page 230 it says, "He kept his head down all day." This shows he has emotion because if he keeps his head down he must either be sad or emarrased.

So i have 2 different reasons to prove that Sir James Thomas has a ¨Dynamite¨ type of character (bad pun intended chapter 40)

One way that JT is a complex character is that his character traits create conflict with Marlee ,this happened on (pg 223.) Another way I know JT is complex is that he reveals his weakness of not taking responsibility. Is when JT was when Red found the box of dynamite, that was on (pg. 207.) Then later blamed it on his brother for making him go and follow Marlee into the rock crusher.(pg 223.)

There are a few ways JT has changed throughout the story. JT's character has changed from not liking black people to liking them. One way I know that is the text sates,"the dynamite is locked in the trunk of Reds car."Jt would not of told Marlee that the TNT is in the back of Red car if he did not care about Liz.Also he undergoes before that in the text it says,"gosh Marlee you're a square tonight protecting you're colored fiends."That tells me that he has evolved from not liking Liz to liking Liz.

One of the ways I see JT from LOLR as a complex/dynamic character is how he shows examples of his traits conflicting with others. As an example of that on page 230 JT talks about his brother hitting him because he thought his brother ratted him out because of his hesitation to take the TNT when they found it. I also found that he experiences changes for the better when on page 231 JT told Marlee about the TNT where in the beginning JT was using Marlee to do his work. "...the dynamite is locked in the trunk of his car." In conclusion JT shows a variety of complex character traits as shown.

A way that JT is a complex character is when he helps Red, or is forced to help Red with the dynamite. This advances the plot in a way because then the police have to get involved and Liz's family is in danger. I know JT helps, because on page 209 it says, "JT!" he barked, "You gonna help me or not?" JT glanced at me, then his brother. He started placing the dynamite in the bag." This is a conflict that advances the plot because Red has dynamite, and Marlee thinks that JT is helping Red in his act of destruction.

I think that JT is a complex character because he changes from good to bad in the matter of seconds. My example for this is in the beginning of the book on chapter 13, page 63 it said "Can you believe it?' JT said. 'A n***** at our school." And this shows that JT was happy and then got really disgusted that there was an African American at their school. My second reason that JT is that his character traits create conflict/hatred and does not like things that don't go his way and will not let anything stand in his way. My example for this is on chapter 36 page 180 it quotes "JT is a jerk" and in my opinion he is rude and takes advantage of people and does not care about anybody's feelings except his own.

JT is not introduced as a complex character, instead, he is introduced as a crush with a suspicious brother. As the book progresses, JT's character begins to show signs of being a more complex character. The first time that we begin to see him as a complex character is on page 63, paragraph 13. ""Can you believe it?" JT said. "A nigger at our school?"" This shows number eight on the complex character list, because JT is both advancing the plot and developing a major theme because what he says inspires Marlee to stand up for what she believes in both with Liz and the schools, as well as teaching her that that friends are friends, no matter the color. Another part in the text where JT demonstrates a trait of a complex character is on page 25, paragraph 8, "...JT picked up my homework and put it into his book." Marlee is at first confused, but as the story progresses, Marlee becomes fed up with this behavior, which in turn, teaches her a valuable lesson about how the world works, and how people are not always honest. This fits into number seven on the list of complex character traits, as JT has significant interactions with other characters, mainly affecting Marlee. In conclusion, although JT is originally introduced as Marlee's crush, he becomes a much more complex character as the book goes on. He advances the plot of LOLR as well as have a significant interaction with Marlee that completely changes the course of their relationship.

JT is complex because when he followed Marlee into the rock crusher (Pg 205), that changed him. When he threw the satchel and found the box of TNT(Pg 209) this lead to a chain of events like getting called on by the police(Pg 211),and getting hit by Red(Pg 230). Another reason is that on page 230, he was calm when Marlee cornered him. I think that he would've done what she'd done when he cornered her: ignore and walk away. This shows that he is a complex character.

JT has changed in many ways. One of the ways he changed in was good. You can see him taking baby steps towards the right thing. When they started the school year, JT was very manipulative. He made Marlee do his math homework for him. The next big time she met him was when JT and Red were throwing eggs at the house. He still threw the eggs, but kind of protected Marlee from JT. After that, when Marlee tripped over the dynamite, he helped her up. And where we are in this book, he keeps Marlee informed where the dynamite is. He is starting to change, even though he is in a very segregationist family. JT is getting better, but he can still get bossed around by his brother. When he is alone, he is pretty strong.

I think that James Thomas is a complex character. First of all he has a great to bad to ok change. Chapter five is all about how perfect and funny everyone thinks he is, and later in the book he changes to a betrayal friend to his helper, Marlee, when he and his brother stole dynamite. The good thing is that he claims to be sorry. Also I think JT is a dynamic character because he has important interactions with other characters in the book. After the Halloween incident Marlee doesn't trust JT. On page 207, JT says, "'You all right, Marlee?' 'Why do you care,'" Marlee asked. JT created a conflict with Marlee and she is not gonna forgive him. This is why I think that JT is a complex character.

One of the reasons J.T. is a complex character is that he has significant interactions with other characters such as Marlee, Liz, Red, Sally and numerous other characters. the next day at school J.T. has a black eye ¨What happened to you?´ I asked.

In the book "Lions of Little Rock", JT is a complex character. One way JT is a complex character is that he causes conflict with Marlee. He does this when he starts to force Marlee to do his homework. When Marlee desides to stop doing JT's homework, he goes to Marlee's mom and she tells Marlee " Well, he told me he was having trouble in math, and you're so good at it, I thought you could tutor him." This shows that JT is causing conflict with Marlee because he is forcing Marlee to do his homework when she doesn't want to.

Some of JT 's character traits create conflict in his character because although sometimes he can be fairly nice, when he's with his brother Red or if there's something he wants he acts differently. For example, at the beginning, JT acted fake nice to Marlee just so she could do his math for him. On page 28 the text says, "On Friday I arrived early and waited by the picnic table and again JT arrived just before the bell rang. He winked at me as he took my homework. 'Like your hair'. " This shows JT is just being nice to get what he wants. JT also acts in a bad way when he's with his brother. He goes with his brother to the 'rock crusher' to harass Marlee. But on page 208 it says, " 'Red!' said JT "Daddy's right,"said Red,'You are a little coward.' " In this part, JT's 'good side' shows. That's what makes him complex. He tries to impress his brother and charms people into giving him what he wants yet he's sometimes shows his nice side to Marlee. This also gives him conflict because he doesn't stay true to himself and he switches off personality traits often.

The question was "In what ways might JT be considered 'complex."' I now understand that JT has very many ways to describe him as complex character. First, the events that he had experienced, occurred because of his actions/ choices in the book. I know this because when his brother, Red, found the dynamite JT would have left it and because red was there the other characters in the book have impacted on him. In the text, JT stated that he did whatever was right to his brother and father. Which shows that not only does JT follow his brother now, he is going to be changed forever. The character, Red, changed JT and he might not be able to change himself again.

JT is a very complex person with an odd range of emotions. He does a few things to make him complex which I will engage you in.

I believe JT is a complex character because of reason #4. #4 means he has a variety of traits and different sides to his personality. I think this because throughout the story, for example, in the beginning of the book (starting at chapter 5) JT was being all friendly to Marlee. This shows his nice side and his "cute" side. He was helpful when Marlee spilled the pencils (page 21). JT could of let Marlee pick them up all on her own but instead, he helped. His other side is when he is bad and lining. For example, on page 21, he says,"my brothers car had a flat...I had to help change it." But later on the page, it says that there was no grease or dirt on him. Meaning he lied to not be late. He was being bad when he was egging a house on page 118. He knew he should not of egged them. Something bad always happens when he is with his brother, Red.

I know JT is a complex character because he has important interactions with other characters. I saw this where he made Marlee do his math and later that make JT able to use telling people that she helped him on math so she did not tell about the egging. Comments are closed.
