At the end of our reading, we found Marlee locked in the trunk of Red's car after she tried to take the dynamite from his trunk to prevent further disaster. Do you think Marlee was brave, stupid, or a little of both to attempt to get the dynamite? Write a paragraph to explain your thinking. Use your own reasoning, evidence from the text and analysis.

I believe that Marlee was very brave when she tried to retrieve the dynamite from Reds trunk. I think this is brave because she is taking it from Red. I know it's bravery because on page 240, it states that the lions roared during the day. The lions usually only roared at night but this time thy did it during the day. This is clearly not a coincidence. The author would not put that detail in there if it was not important.

I believe that the character Marlee from the book LIONS OF LITTLE ROCK by Kristin Levine in the context of chapter 47 is showing bravery by attempting to get the dynamite. One way I know this is by the fact that she is scared to do it at first. I personally believe that true bravery is shown when doing something you are afraid to do therefore by attempting to take the dynamite even though she was scared Marlee showed bravery. Evidence of this bravery can be found on pg.240, " I knew I had to do it. I took deep breaths trying to remember I was brave..." I believe this quote shows that Marlee was brave even though she was afraid by demonstrating her fear in the phrase, "...I took deep breaths..." deep breathing often is an attempt to calm down therefore showing her fear. This quote shows her determination along with her fear within the phrase, "I knew I had to do it...." this phrase shows Marlee trying to convince herself to do it showing her trying to be afraid even though feeling fear as demonstrated by her breathing. Due to this evidence I believe that Marlee is showing bravery by attempting to get the dynamite.

I think that she is being brave because she knew the right thing to do was to take the dynamite and give it to the police. I know this because on page 240 it says ¨trying to remember I was brave." This shows that she is brave because if she is telling herself that then she knows that is true but she doesnt want to believe it.

In Lions of Little Rock, when Marlee attempts to take the dynamite from Red's trunk of his car, I think she is both brave, and a little bit stupid at the same time. I believe that Marlee is brave in her attempt because it's an explosive that could possibly kill her, and yet she still does it anyway. She also has a chance to get caught by Red. I believe she is brave because in the book it says, "I don't want to touch it.' Liz said. 'Neither do I,' I said." but then it says she starts to touch them anyway, "I picked up the next stick. No one blew up...I was sweating by the time I got to the last stick." This shows that even though Marlee knows that the dynamite is dangerous and it could possibly kill her and Liz, she still is able to tell herself she can do it. This is why that I think Marlee is part brave when she collects the dynamite.

At the end of our reading we found Marlee in the back of Red's car. Personally I thought Marlee was brave to first of all take initiative to get the dynamite and after she fell in stay in the trunk of the car for thrity minutes! I think it is important to notice that she had the need to get the dynamit so that Red didn't do bad things with it. My first piece of evidence is when Marlee said "JT said (that Red) has the dynamite in the trunk of his car."... "Maybe we should check.". This shows us that Marlee was brave enough to want to do the right thing even if it was technically the wrong thing to do.

I think that Marlee was brave when she grabbed the dynamite. I think that she was brave because at the beginning of the book she backed down from a diving board pg(3) which is much less scary then picking up dynamite. When Marlee thought " I was brave, but I could not move." pg (240) Later she heard the lions roar and that gave her the strength and bravery to open the trunk of the car. It is important to notice that Marlee just needed a little push to be her bravest. In concussion Marlee was brave when she grabbed the dynamite...

I think that the main character, Marlee, is extremely brave when she tries to get J.T. and Red’s dynamite. Marlee wants to help her friend, Liz, and their families from getting blown up or hurt. They’re trying to get into Red’s car when Liz says, “‘You try the key.’ I knew I had to do it.” This quote shows that Marlee is driven by her bravery to do something she would never have done before. She believes that you must fight for what you want, and for what you think is right for the world, in this case, integration. I think that Marlee is very brave when she “steals” the dynamite from Red’s car.

I believe that Marlee is smart to go back and get the dynamite out of Reds car. The reason I think that is because Marlee likes Liz and would help Liz if she was in danger. The reason I know that is because the text states,"I jumped up again, throwing my hands over my mouth to tell her to be quiet."

I believe that Marlee was both a little bit brave and stupid in her decision to try and remove the sticks of dynamite from Red's truck. The first demonstration of Marlee being brave yet stupid is when she steals the key from Red's key collection on page 238, paragraph 12. "Thinking about the rocks made me angry, and being angry made me forget about being scared, so I walked over to the bench and picked up the keys." In this quote, Marlee can either be perceived as brave or stupid. Brave because she picked up the keys and got past being scared and nervous, or stupid, because she picked the keys up in anger, instead of after thinking and weighing pros and cons. The author has left it up to the reader to interpret whether or not Marlee was brave or foolish in this situation. Another place that Marlee could either be interpreted at brave or foolish is on page 240, paragraphs 12 and 13. "Let's go," Liz said. "We'll call the police.

I believe at chapter 47 Marlee was being brave as well as a little stupid. A reason I found that she was being brave is that she knew that Red was going to hurt someone with the TNT (pg. 208) so I believe she decided she would want to save them. For instance, Marlee says on page 209 "I'd have to warn Liz." She wanted to help Liz instead of staying away and keeping it safe, which is a brave thing to do.

On page 241 the novel says "I just couldn't face the thought of leaving any loose ends, so I climbed into the trunk to reach the last two sticks of dynamite." The stupid part of that is that she climbed into the trunk and that is where she went wrong. In conclusion she displayed both bravery and stupidity in chapter 47.

When Marlee decided to steal the dynamite from Red's trunk, I think she was being brave, not stupid. A reason this was brave of Marlee and not stupid is that she had sound reasoning. When Liz tries to tell Marlee to just tell the police about the dynamite, she tells Liz "I already called the police, they aren't going to do anything about it," and "Red'll move it! Even if we leave the key in the lock, he'll know someone was-" When Marlee decides to steal the dynamite, she realized that the police already had checked Red's house. When Marlee called the police before, Marlee had told the police that the dynamite was at Red's house, but Red moved it before the police checked. The police wouldn't believe here the second time she said Red had dynamite. Also, she realized Red would just move the dynamite elsewhere if she told the police. Therefore, Marlee thought here only choice was to steal the dynamite. Because Marlee believed she had a solid reason to steal the dynamite, Marlee was being brave.

At first I thought Marlee was being brave and sly to go and get the dynamite. But then my opinion changed to be Marlee is being severely insecure to go in the trunk of Red's car to get the last dynamite sticks. Also her main initiative is to get the dynamite and take it to the police. Marlee is being insecure because she is neither being stupid or absolutely brave in her choices. In the beginning of chapter 47 Marlee is being curious. I know this because on (page 236) it says "I tried not to get too exited, but I ended up running all the way down the hill to the lions cage. She was not there." Which tells me that Marlee is not in control of her emotions and her ability to stay mentally in control.

I think Marlee was really brave when she attempted to pick up the dynamite. Not alot of people would be brave enough to hold dynamite and take it from a truck, especially considering the situation Marlee was in. Marlee stole someone's keys, opened their truck without permission and took the dynamite in the trunk. It takes alot of bravery to do that. For example on page

Marlee is brave when she tries to grab the 2 dynamite sticks from Red's car. A reason I think this is because by keeping the sticks in her hands, she could hide them in her satchel for long enough to get it away from Red. On page 208, it says what Red would do if Marlee didn't help." 'I'm saying,' said Red.'we'll find your little friend and show her whole family what we think of ni*$@#^ who try to pass.'" When Marlee takes the dynamite, I was thinking, that does NOT go with her character. I think she was brave and stupid. She was a little brave when she decided to do what she did. Why else would you steal an aggressive persons keys? But she was also pushed by stupidity, "Thinking about the rocks made me angry, and being angry made me FORGET ABOUT BEING SCARED." You can't be brave without being scared, so forgetting is a little of both.

Also, she was staying up and handing out flyers, her mom got a migraine, so she probably was a little tired. She might have been pressured by Liz, the way you might show off when your friend is around. Since she was tired, she clumsily hit the trunk down on herself. Marlee was acting both stupid and brave.

So I think that Marlee Nisbett was brave because of the fact that she was sweating that proves that she had Adrenalin which is made when somebody is scared and bravery results to that from this quote "I was sweating when I was done". So that means that she was brave. Another reason is because she is been that way since Liz got kicked from school.

When thinking about the question “Do you think Marlee was brave, stupid, or a little of both to attempt to get the dynamite?” I think that during this section of the book, Marlee is being brave. One reason I think she is being brave because Marlee before would have not even wanted to do anything, she would have wanted to stay in the place that she thought she belonged in, but now the Marlee has changed. I think that Marlee wants to do what is best for not only herself but for everyone else around her. I know this because Marlee is so dedicated to work with the WEC to get schools reopened because she wants her sister to get her education and and she wants Judy to come home. In the text when Marlee and Liz are talking about their friendship Marlee states “ please...daddy just sent Judy away to live with Granny in Pine Bluff.” and Liz reacts “But who is there for you to talk to?” “exactly” stated Marlee. This shows that everyone knows that Judy means a lot to Marlee and without her Marlee can turn into a totally different person. Also I know that her mom is very worried about how Just is not getting educated. Marlee is a very good person, doing things for other people, showing that Marlee would try everything she can to get her sister, Judy, education. Another reason when Marlee and Liz are at Red’s car, Liz tells her that she should do it because it was her idea, and Marlee thinks “ I had to do it...trying to remember that I was brave. I think that Marlee is being brave because once again her old self would have wanted to stay away from trouble but she knows she has to do the right thing. I know that she is being brave because of her courage to doing something else than she normally wouldn't do. She is being brave by stepping outside of her comfort zone. Therefor, I think Marlee is being brave when she attempted to get the dynamite because of what she does for everyone else and her courage to go outside of her comfort zone.

In my opinion choosing to steal the TNT from Reds car is a very brave idea. Especially because it came from Marlee, who at the beginning of the book wouldn't jump off a diving board. Now she is saying let's steal TNT from a person who does not like and wants to hurt me´s car. And then she argues with Liz about it. Because Liz (the brave and outgoing one) thinks it is dangerous. But Marlee takes the keys and opens the trunk anyway. Plus she also didn't know that she would get locked in the trunk. Comments are closed.
