I think that the lesson is that Grandpa is trying to teach Martin that the medicine bag is a sacred thing and that he should not treat it normally or wear it in a place where people do not understand.

Aurora, I agree completely with how you described the medicine bag as sacred, it truly sums up how Grandpa probably felt.

I bileve that the message is that his grandpa wants martin to understand the importnce of the medicine bag to his family and pass it down from generation to generation.

I think that the lesson that Grandpa is trying to teach Martin by re-telling the story of Iron Shell and the medicine bag is that this is a tradition so keep it and that it is old and has lots of memories in it.

I agree completely. The memories need to be preserved. I believe that's why the medicine bag is being passed down. I do wish you included a little bit more because I thought your did great but I wanted to know why else. Over all it was fantastic!

I think the message/lesson that Grandpa is teaching Martin is, never give up. I think it's this message/lesson because it says in the text that Iron Shell got captured along with other young men which is very bad because he ether started a quest or just ended a quest, I forgot which one it was. But he was captured and I think was forced to go to a white people's school and then he became a blacksmith and everything turned out okay. This ties with never give up because if things in your life are going badly and you want to give up, don't because sometimes your life changes are good and you'll like them. I know from personal experience.

I didn't think of it that way! I loved how you said "I know from personal experience" because it felt more personal. I liked too that because I knew you were telling the truth. You used a reference from the text that I thought was super important to your text. Congrats it was great!

I did not think about that part where Iron Shell is captured. Nice evidence. :)

I think the lesson that grandpa is trying to teach Martin is that the medicine bag is sacred. In the text it said that Iron Shell sacrifised a lot for the medicine bag. Therefore, Martin should not take receiving the medicine bag lightly.

I agree the Medicine Bag is super important and Marvin should take this to means he's super important like the bag. I loved how you said "the medicine bag is sacred" because I didn't think you it that way. Congrats on your amazing blog post!

I agree that the medicine bag contains memory's and should not be taken lightly completely. Especially because grandpa said he should only wear it on the reservation so that proves its a serous matter.

I believe Grandpa Joe Iron Shell was trying to teach Marvin a few lessons by giving him The Medicine Bag. First I believed he was trying to make Marvin feel a little guilty because the text said "I could tell that he had known all along I was afraid he'd embarrass me in front of my friends". Meaning Grandpa knew Marvin was embarrassed of him. Second, I definitely believe Grandpa Joe wanted to pass down the history of the Iron Shell name. Thirdly, I he wanted to show Marvin the big problem. Many may think the problem of this story is Marvin being embarrassed of his granddad and hiding him from his friends. But the true problem is actually Granddad Joe was getting old. By giving Marvin The Medicine Bag he was showing him that he thought it was his time to pass on and show him that he was being selfish and only thinking of himself. It was rude to worry about his problems not his Grandfather's important issues. For example, his lonesomeness and his old age. I believe Mervin understood all of this when he put the sacred sage in the medicine bag.

I completely agree! The guilty insight was very unique and I didn't think of it that way as I believed the Grandfather to be a bit more personable and hardy, unaware of Marvin's negligence.

I believe that Grandpa Joe Iron Shell was trying to advise Martin of several lessons by entrusting him with The Medicine Bag. First of all, Grandpa Joe is instructing Martin to preserve the momentous and pious name of the Iron Shell Clan. The text states that many arduous travesties were endured with the intent of a triumphant success with the Medicine Bag. When Grandpa was given the prestige of possessing the bag, he carried out the importance of tradition and intended to give it to his son. Yet, he was drafted in World War 2, and suffered a disastrous assault that in turn caused an untimely demise. This means that Marvin is the next in line, and must retain his diverse heritage by respecting the Medicine Bag and it's help to the family.

I think that grandpa is trying to teach Marvin the importance of the medicine bag by telling him why he wears it. I think grandpa knows that Marvin doesn't want it so that's why he told him why he wears it. The medicine bag is a tradition Grandpa wants to pass down and share the memory's that go with it.

I loved your comment because it was unique and I hadn't read a comment like it so far! I loved how you said "share the memory's that go with it" because you said something that most people said it in a beautiful, different way. I do wish you would of went in more detail because it was so great! I LOVED your blog post because it was unique and different from the rest!

I think the lesson that Grandpa is trying to teach Martin by sharing his memory of Iron Shell and the medicine bag is how the time is changing and how important it is to keep our history strong. I think this because the text says, “It would not be right to wear it in this time and place, where no one will understand.” and when Grandpa told Martin “…you are again on the reservation.” Both of those quotes are saying how it would not be accepted for what it was and how he needed to keep the medicine bag close, the medicine bag is a sign of Martins history and when he was told to keep it close it also means to keep the story that goes with it close. That is why I think the lesson Grandpa is trying to teach Martin is time is changing and how important it is to keep our history strong.

I think Martin's grandpa, Joe Iron Shell, is sharing with him the memory of the medicine bag and Iron Shell is to represent the memories or troubles of early manhood, because he said, "I sent your mother and sister away. What you will hear today is only for a man's ears. What you will receive is only for a man's hands," before he started to tell the story. It may also represent the memories and rocky start of manhood and/or the mysteries or the "trying to figure out who you are" section of your life. Guidance and the locked up memories, if you will.

What a fantastic perspective, Bella! I completely agree on the "Who you are" portion because it's so elegant and unique, as the bag/Grandpa could represent a Shepard and Martin is the stay sheep trying to find it's way. Bravo on a ingenious response Bella and keep up the goof work! =)

I think that the lesson that Grandpa is trying to teach Martin is how important the medicine bag is and its history. Grandpa’s dad had set out on his vision quest. The text says “He took a piece of the iron for his medicine bag, which he had made of elkskin years before, to prepare for his quest.” This shows that the medicine bag was important for the adventure Grandpa’s dad took, because he made it years before to prepare. In the text it states “They gave him the name Iron Shell”. The bag holds the bit of iron that he was named after. This makes the medicine bag special. Also it has lasted through 4 generations. That shows that it is something important. Therefore Grandpa is teaching Martin the importance of the medicine bag.

Martin's grandpa is trying to teach him the lesson of how he should be more responsible because he is getting older. When he says "This first Iron Shell kept the piece of iron with him at all times and believed it gave him protection from the evils of those unhappy days" he's telling Martin that the because the medicine bag is important to him. You usually try to take care of something valued, so Martin learns that not only does his grandpa thinks that he's going to die, he think Martin needs something to make him aware that the older you are, the more responsible you have to be.

I think that the grandpa is trying to teach Martin a very special lesson about the connection of his family. When he is telling the tale of the medicine bag he is telling the importance of the bag. I believe that the family passes it down so you have a memory of those who have passed on. When the granpa tells Martin it was not time to get the medicine bag he truely meant that this is between him and Martin. So when the grandpa does pass on he has some thing to remember his family members by. So the message is, no matter what family is always going to be there, in your heart. There could also be the moral of, never forget who you truely are and who your family is and was. Comments are closed.
