Flex Testing: April 29th and May 2nd are flex testing days. Students need to come by appointment only to complete the end of year language arts MAP assessment. This is the benchmark assessment that adjusts to the individual student. It allows me to track growth from beginning to middle to end of the year for each child. Please use the Signup Genius link below to sign up for a time if you've not done so already.
Continuation: 6th grade continuation will be on May 24th at 9:00 a.m. There are still some opportunities to donate food, drinks, and paper products for our post ceremony celebration.
Here’s what we’re working on this week:
Math: Today we completed our unit on 2D and 3D geometry by looking at the polygons that are formed when three dimensional shapes are intersected by a plane. On Wednesday we will review the material from the unit. Students will have an opportunity to practice and study for an end of unit assessment on Thursday.
Reading: As we continue to read and discuss The Book Thief, students will explore how an author develops and contrasts the point of view of different characters or narrators in a text. We will Identify how particular elements of a story or drama interact (e.g. how setting shapes the characters or plot).
Writing: Our class is writing product reviews. This week we are working on body paragraphs by organizing reasons and evidence logically, providing support for claim(s) with relevant reasoning and evidence, and seeking out support from a variety of primary or secondary sources. We will then work on writing a conclusion that supports the argument presented rather than simply restating the introduction. On Thursday we will also learn about strategies for testing a product and use surveys to support our opinion writing.
Science: We will play a couple of games to create a model that shows the flow of energy and matter in an ecosystem. Students will see how energy is lost as it passes through trophic levels. We’ll see that a stable ecosystem is balanced. That balance can be affected by changes within the ecosystem or influences outside of the ecosystem.
Social Studies: Students will be learning about global citizenship and how countries work together to solve issues that impact local and wider spread geographic locations. We will learn about The United Nations and have our own mini UN summit where we will work together to end poverty.
