Here’s what you need to know this week…
Boot Boot Camp: This Friday 6th grade is taking a hike around our school grounds to make sure boots are comfortable before we embark on our Outdoor Lab adventure. If your child has their boots by Friday, which is highly recommended, they should wear them to school on, August 28th. Your child may bring other shoes for PE or recess if needed.
Schedules for Outdoor Lab will go home next week.
Outdoor Lab Letters: Each day during OUtdoor Lab we will have time for a class meeting. During that time I will hand out mail. The easiest way to get a letter or letters to your child is to give them directly to me. I’ll pack them with my things and bring them up. You can also send mail to camp but it takes about a week to get up there so you will want to send it by the middle of next week at the latest. The address is:

Picture Day- Picture day is September 1st. I have a training the day before and won’t be there to remind the kids. We will have our pictures taken around noon which is before lunch and recess.
Here’s what we’re working on in class this week:
Math: We are working on defining and applying the concepts of integers, absolute value. We are comparing integers and absolute value as well as adding integers.
Reading: We are choosing challenging independent reading books, reviewing annotation strategies, and learning expectations for responding to text in writing. Students will need these skills as we dig into text discussions throughout the year. We will also review close reading strategies with the purpose of monitoring comprehension and collecting text evidence that demonstrate and supports higher level thinking in literature responses and discussions. .
Writing: We are learning at strategies for collecting ideas that lead to personal narrative writing. We are capturing possible topics by listing firsts, lasts, strong emotions, places, interactions, etc. We have started several personal narrative pieces as a part of the planning process. We will pull from our story starters when it’s time to write a full draft and publish a complete narrative. Additionally we will learn about how 6th grade writers can develop characters using character traits and conflict.
Science/Social Studies: Much of our science and social studies time has been devoted to preparations for Outdoor Lab, developing class norms and routines, introductions/reminders about band and orchestra and other class and school business. I also introduced a service project that we will be doing in conjunction with our tech challenge. We will be working to mentor 2nd graders at my sister’s school in Montbello through letters and more. OUr hope is to encourage some young, struggling scholars in their growth as readers and to build relationships across two different communities in the metro area.
