Friday Folders: It has come to my attention that some Friday folder information is not making it home. On the school end, Mrs. Factor has been filling Friday folders each Friday and I have either handed folders to students or placed them in their mailboxes at the end of the day. Although students get a reminder to stop by the mailbox as we dismiss on Friday, it is the students’ responsibility to make sure these things get home. Our mailboxes are right there in the classroom.
I have noticed that many students have already been forgetting to bring folders back. In this case, packets of information are paper clipped and delivered to students but this makes it easy for things to fall out in transfer. I pick up a lot of dropped Friday folder material after school on Fridays. Please make sure that Friday folders are put back in backpacks each week and remind your child that it is their responsibility to pick them up and drop them off. I will do the same. It is important that students begin to take responsibility for this task as they prepare for middle school.
Fun Run: Our Boosterthon Fun Run is this Friday. 6th grade’s run time is 10:50-11:50. Visit funrun.com to learn more and log pledges.

Outdoor Lab Cards: 6th graders at Coronado will attend Outdoor Lab at Mt. Evans on May 15th-19th. Outdoor Lab allows students to explore and apply learning around science, team building, problem solving and more in our beautiful mountains. Ms. Yoxall and I will host a meeting when we get closer to our adventure. However, many parents like to pay part of the Outdoor Lab fee ($350) with the Lab Cards program. King Soopers and Safeway offer reloadable gift cards for purchase through the Outdoor Lab Foundation. Each time these cards are loaded, a percentage of the money goes towards a lab fee fund. There are several types of cards to choose from. To learn more, or apply for a card, please visit the Outdoor Lab Foundation’s Lab Card Website, linked below.
Math: Students are applying rules for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division to rational numbers. Rational numbers are numbers that can be written as a ratio (fractions, decimals and percents). Additionally we are working on building mathematical practices for clearly communicating mathematical thinking and solutions in organized, logical representations. These can include numbers, words and pictures.
Reading: We are working on identifying and analyzing elements of narrative texts. We have analyzed how setting can contribute to our understanding of character and conflict. We are learning about how characters develop throughout the plot as a protagonist or antagonist. We’ve seen that conflict develops as a result of the disparity between a character's wants and challenges. We have looked at a variety of plot arcs that include exposition (characters and setting), rising action (develops the conflict),a climax (turning point moment); falling action and a resolution (to tie up the story).
Students are working on self-selecting and monitoring comprehension using the elements of narrative. This is part of a major project that will be due at the end of October. There is time to work on the project daily so there should be minimal work at home. Right now the only assigned homework is reading. Students have, and will continue to receive detailed directions, grading rubrics, and examples to help support their work on the project. The current phase is reading and note taking. As students read, they are collecting evidence about characters, setting, theme, and vocabulary. The reading of the novel should be completed by next Friday in order to provide time to complete the other components.
Writing: Students are drafting realistic fiction pieces. We began by planning with story arcs (plot), character studies, and themes. Students began drafting a beginning that grounds the reader in a setting and introduces the character with important trait details. We have been working on writing that shows descriptive details vs. telling the reader through summary. Students have a checklist as well as mentor texts to use to guide their writing process.
Science: We have just introduced the Periodic Table of the Elements and students are learning how to read the table, determine the number of protons, neutrons and electrons in atoms, and notice the chemical properties that element groups share. On Thursday students will be selecting two elements to study in depth. For each element, students will create a poster as part of the 6th Grade Periodic Table that will be displayed in the main hallway of Coronado. Students will then complete a report on one element, it’s properties, uses and discovery. For the other element, students will create a three dimensional model. The research and report pieces will be done primarily in class. The model will be created at home. Direction will come your way at the beginning of October and students will have a month to complete their visual piece.
Social Studies: Having mapped our world, and gained an idea of where key features appear on our Earth, we began learning about how the Western Hemisphere was populated. We are now looking at attributes of culture and students are doing a preliminary study of early cultures in Central, South and North America to build interest.. They will soon select one culture- Inuit, Mayan, Inca or Aztec- for an in depth study of culture and the effects of the Columbian Exchange. More information on that project to come.
