Tech Challenge: Our tech challenge project has been so successful thus far! We have met and raised our goal several times and will be able make wonderful book bags for our buddies as well as make a donation to their school to bring them for a visit at Coronado and buy some new books for their library.
There’s still time to donate. Our Go Fund Me will be open until Friday, December 18th. Visit the link below to make a donation and spread the word!
When we return from break, our class will host a book drive for new or gently used picture books to put in our book bags. Tell your friends! The drive begins the first day back in January.

Jingle Jog and Friday Fun: On Friday our class will enjoy a Drop Everything and Read morning. Students may bring a blanket, pillow and books to enjoy. In the afternoon Coronado will host its 2nd annual Jingle Jog. An optional donation of a new pair of kids/youth underwear, socks, hats or gloves will help support the Jeffco Schools Foundation Serving Kids program which is in desperate need of these types of items. Anyone who donates an item will help us “decorate” our Jogging Christmas Tree with an ornament.
6th graders take on a leadership role in the Jingle Jog and will be helping the rest of Coronado’s classes get ready, warmed up and through the course. As students will be volunteering with multiple classes, we will not have an official running time for 6th grade. Parents are still welcome to come and enjoy the fun between 1:00 and 2:40. Your child will learn their class assignments and times on Wednesday.
Morning Math: You will be receiving a math test in your child’s Friday folder this week. If your child received a 1 or 2 they will be given an opportunity to retake the test after break. Using their Kahn academy accounts to work on expressions, equations and inequalities is a great way to study over break.
Beginning in January I will host a morning math help session on Thursday mornings. This is an opportunity for your child to get additional support on math homework, classwork and tests. Students can come as the need arises and there is no signup required. Students may come any Thursday at 7:30 as the need arises. This is a time for additional support and will not be focused on extension activities.
Here’s what we're working on this week:
Math: We are continuing to work with ratios and rates. Students are writing ratios and learning how they are used in real life situations. They will also learn how to solve proportions.
Reading: We studied our final signpost for nonfiction close reading. We will be applying all of our strategies and sign posts to collect evidence for a Socratic seminar discussion on the text My Mother the Scientist. We will discuss how the role of women has changed in our society in the past 50 years.
Writing: Students have drafted an opening paragraph for a feature article. We will move on to our body paragraphs with a focus on organization and using, elaborating on, and citing evidence, using transitions and writing to engage the audience with craft. Students will also work with partners to revise and edit their writing.
Science/Social Studies: We are splitting this time between tech challenge and science. In science we will learn about density and apply the measurement of mass to a formula as well as make observations using objects in water.
