Whoa! What a whirlwind it's been these past couple of weeks! And the excitement continues with Halloween on its way. Here's what you need to know:
Halloween Party: Thanks to those of you who have sent in party money. Our party planners have asked for a donation of 6 dollars to cover both the Halloween and Valentine’s parties. Unfortunately we aren’t able to have the office cash our checks so if you haven’t sent in money, you can send cash or make the check out to Allison Mackey.
As for party details, we will change into costumes directly after our lunch at 1:25. The parade will start at 1:40. Parties will begin at 2:00. Thanks to Allison Mackey and Madelynn Orr for volunteering to put our party together this year!
Friday Rewards: Thanks to our successful fun run fund raising, the class earned tech time and sock and slipper day. We celebrate both of these on Friday. Students may wear fun socks or slippers of their choice and bring in a technology tool that is OK with their parents. I will store any technology in the classroom when it is not in use.
Math: We are solving equations using addition, subtraction, multiplication and division using the operative inverse and the addition, subtraction, multiplication and division property of equality. We’ve talked about real life situations that require us to solve for unknown such as determining how much Halloween candy to purchase in order to make sure all trick-or-treaters get a few pieces.
Reading: Students will construct complex inferences about information presented in a text and identify and explain several textual details which contributed to the inference. They will determine and evaluate the central ideas presented in a text.
Writing: We are working daily on drafting fiction stories for 2nd grade buddies that we are mentoring this year. This week we are purposefully incorporating poetic techniques, sensory language, and/or figurative language into our own writing to maximize the effect on the intended audience. We are also working daily with revising partners with a new revising focus each day. We are implementing the use of our color coded revising cues.
Science/Social Studies: Students are wrapping up their research for both science and social studies and creating their written presentation components. We are focusing on using the rubric to hold themselves accountable for the required information as well as the presentation of the final product.
