Field Trips
This Friday is our book bag delivery field trip to Oakland Elementary. We will be eating lunch with our buddies so 6th graders need to bring a sack lunch on Friday. We will be leaving Coronado at 9:00ish and will return around 1:15.
Ken Caryl visitation day is January 27th. If you have not called to RSVP, please do so as soon as possible by contacting Denise Grabowski at 303-982-4645. They would like to know who is planning on attending shadow day by this Friday, the 22nd. It would help me to plan as well if I know who will NOT be attending shadow day. If you’re child is not attending, please let me know by email. Thanks!
Here’s what we’re working on in class this week...
Math: Students are calculating slope and using the equation y=kX to calculate direct variation to determine proportionality. They will explain connections between the constant of proportionality in a table and the corresponding graph and equation. The end of the week will provide us with an opportunity to work on a problem solving activity calculating proportions and percents to plan for an ice cream business. Students will communicate their mathematical process through numbers and writing.
Reading: Our unit is historical influences in fiction and nonfiction. We will work with the historical fiction novel The Lions of LIttle Rock and apply a number of primary and secondary nonfiction texts to understand perspective and themes of the novel. This week we are doing a close reading of the Gettysburg Address and will start our novel by looking at character traits and perspective of the narrator. We will respond verbally, and in writing to texts that represent different historical periods and perspectives and Gather textual evidence to determine explicit/implicit main idea(s).
Writing: Students are completing their informational articles. We talked about the process of thoughtful revision using the checklist of expectations for the unit. They will revise and edit for necessary information vs.. unnecessary information, voice and word choice, organization, spelling, punctuation and grammar. Then a final draft will be submitted.
Science/Social Studies: For tech challenge we have selected books for books bags our book bag committee will be adding the other goodies on Thursday. We will be delivering them along with our larger book donation and field trip/library funds on Friday. Students will also work on finalizing pieces for our Coronado tech challenge presentation next week.
In science we are learning about how the earth’s layers interact to form and destroy pieces of crust and the impacts of those processes over time.
