5th Grade Behavior: As a 5th grade team, Ms. Vine, Mrs. Hurley and I have had increasing concerns about some of the behaviors we are seeing from our 5th graders. These behaviors include cursing, inappropriate physical contact, and threatening and bullying behaviors. Additionally there has been a lack of respect in the classrooms, with students talking over teachers, playing with items, drawing or reading during instruction, and not putting effort into work. Mrs. Pierorazio and Mr. Soich have also expressed concerns over behaviors that are coming to the office.
Today we held all 5th grade meetings with Mrs. Pierorazio, Mr. Soich, Mrs. Collins, Mrs. Reseigh, and the 5th grade teachers. We separated the boy and girls as different behaviors have surfaced within each group. Students were made aware of our concern and disappointment in the actions of many of our 5th graders. They were reminded of the expectations we have at Coronado and were informed of the serious consequences of continued disrespect, fighting, cussing, and bullying. These consequences will include loss of privileges (recess, lunch in the cafeteria, participating in the reenactment and for some, Williamsburg). Students were also made aware that these behaviors will result in parent contacts, major referrals and suspensions if necessary.
As many of the fighting, bullying and language related behaviors occur away from teachers, my class will have a problem box starting tomorrow. This is a safe place where students can let me know of social problems that need to be addressed. We reminded students that we cannot help problem solve when we don’t know what is occurring.
It is our hope that our conversations today will be a turning point and that our students can rise to be the kind, hard working individuals we believe them to be.
Google Classroom: On the homework page you may have noticed that access to some of tonight’s homework was in students’ Google Classroom. Google Classroom is one of the Google apps students can access through their Jeffco Google accounts. From there I am able to assign work that is automatically delivered back to me, or provide links that only students in the class can access. These links can be videos, notes, presentations, assignments- anything I need them to be able to access for success in our physical classroom or at home.
FYI: The link to the Flip Grid video assignment students did this afternoon for homework is private to our Google classroom. This means that student videos are not available to the public and I am the only one who can see the finished videos, unless I choose to share them with the class.
If you want to know more about the assignment, or about our Google Classroom in general, ask your child to show you his or her Google Classroom. Students who are going on the Williamsburg trip have a Google Classroom and assignments as well.
Rev War Outfitting: We will be outfitted with our costumes for the Rev War reenactment tomorrow morning. Today students were made aware of their positions as soldiers in the British, American, or Hessian armies. For outfitting tomorrow, if your child has a white button up shirt, it would be helpful if they either wear it or bring it to change into for outfitting. Anyone who has riding style boots (tall, close fitting- not Uggs or snow boots) is invited to wear or bring those as well. They are BY NO MEANS REQUIRED and I told the kids they may not tell you to go out and buy them. Students who don’t own boots (which will be most of them) will be making spats to go over regular shoes next month.
If your child is able to bring a white or black garbage bag, that will also help us collect and store their costumes until they are needed again.
I know this is last minute, so please don’t fret if you don’t have access to any of the above items.
Here’s what we’re working on in class:
Math: We are beginning a unit on 3D shapes. This week we are building and working with nets to identify bases, faces, dimensions and names of prisms. We will use our prior knowledge of the area of 2D shapes to find surface area for our 3D objects.
Literacy: Students are working on strategies for determining the main idea and supporting details of nonfiction texts. We are then analyzing the text structure and thinking about why an author would choose to communicate ideas using the different structure types.
Writing: We are applying our understanding of text structure into our own writing. By deciding on the structure (sequence, cause and effect, problem/solution, compare and contrast), we can choose appropriate words to link or transition between ideas. We will also learn how to use a concluding sentence to wrap up one set of ideas and transition to another.
Science: We will be looking at the interaction between humans and the environment when we utilize natural resources.. We will be thinking about what humans can do to limit negative impacts on our environment while still making responsible use of what our Earth provides.
Social Studies: In addition to preparing for our upcoming battle, we are learning about the road to the revolution. With the end of the French and Indian (Seven Years) War, the British are in debt and have introduced the Stamp Act to raise money by taxing stamps and other paper goods. Students are looking at the differing viewpoints on this action between supporters of the Crown and many American Colonists.
