Field Trips On Friday you should have received two letters about upcoming field trips. The first will be our trip to deliver book bags to Oakland Elementary 2nd graders. Students will need to bring a lunch that day as we will eat with our buddies. This trip will be for students only. We are visiting a school that will be in session and we want to minimize our disruption to the other classes in the building.
The other trip is an optional visitation day to Ken Caryl Middle School on January 27th. If your child is participating, you will need to provide transportation and RSVP to the counselor at Ken Caryl. Times and contact info are available on the sheet linked on the KCMS button below. Students not attending shadow day will come to Coronado at the usual time. I will not be attending shadow day and will be in class to teach those at Coronado.

Morning Math: I will be hosting Morning Math this Thursday at 7:30 am. This is an opportunity for students needing additional math support to come and ask questions and practice in a small group. No RSVP required. Just show up ready to ask questions and learn together!
Here’s what we’re working on in class this week...
Math: Students will be able to determine the slope of a line when given a graph. and use it to identify the constant of proportionality (unit rate).
Reading: As we prepare for and hold a Socratic Seminar on the short story “Gaston,” students will pose higher level questions to guide inquiry, make meaningful connections to texts, and analyze the interactions between individuals, events, or how individuals influence ideas or events. We will be using a video as a non traditional text to build background knowledge for our upcoming historical fiction novel study. As students see the video clip they will pose higher level questions to guide future inquiry and connections to text.
Writing: As students complete drafts of informational pieces we will work in small groups and with revising partners and revise to eliminate wordiness and redundancy in text and clarify meaning. Students will receive feedback and revise for a style appropriate to topic, purpose, and audience through word choice, tone, and voice. We will also learn about choosing nonfiction text features to support the essential ideas of our writing.
Science/Social Studies: For tech challenge students will be working on the presentation portion of our project by creating presentations that provide background information and explain the process of the our project. We will also work on thank you letters for our sponsors now that the fundraising portion of our project is complete.
In science we will create and modify models to understand the Earth’s layers in preparation for a study of Earth’s changing surfaces.
