Happy New Year! I hope you enjoyed time with family and friends over the holidays and that parents found a moment to rest and play along with your kids. January and February usher in some exciting events for 5th grade. Here’s what you need to know.
Middle School Visits and Registrations:
Ken Caryl: The counselors and principal will be visiting our class on Wednesday at 1:00 to talk to students about next steps in getting ready for middle school next year. This will include choosing some electives as a part of the registration process. Registration forms will go home Wednesday, to be filled out by students with their parents. Forms will need to be returned to me as there will be a portion I need to sign off on. I know some families are still undecided about their middle school plan, but please go ahead and fill out the form if there is a chance you will choose Ken Caryl. This will allow students a better probability of being placed in an elective they have chosen vs. getting a random placement.
Falcon Bluffs: Counselors from Falcon Bluffs will be visiting Coronado students on the morning of January 16th and there will be a school visit for students on the morning of February 7th. Students who attend Coronado as their neighborhood school, and are not in our center program, typically feed into Falcon. We also have a few GT families each year who choose to leave the center program and attend Falcon as it’s their neighborhood school and better meets the needs of their families. Because it is not the trajectory for the GT Center Program, our whole class will not participate in the counselor visit or the tour, just as Ms. Vine and Mrs. Hurley's 5th graders were not given the opportunity to visit Ken Caryl and will not attend the counselor meeting on Wednesday. If your family is seriously leaning towards Falcon for your child, please let me know via email and I will send those few students to the January 16th meeting and they can accompany Ms. Vine and Mrs. Hurley’s classes on visitation day.
Revolutionary War Reenactment: One of the most exciting events in the scholastic life of a Coronado 5th grader is participating in a costumed reenactment of a Revolutionary War battle. This year students will be recreating The Battle of Long Island. This week you will receive a permission slip for this epic event but I wanted to let you know some dates ahead of time so that you can save the date and watch history unfold.
January 11th, afternoon- Opening presentation to set the stage (students only)
January 30th, morning (8:50)- Outfitting for students (parent volunteers needed)
February 22, morning- Battle training (students only)
February 28th, full day- Reenactment at Bear Creek State Park (all parents welcome)
More details will be in the permission slip letter.
Here’s what we’ll be studying this week:
Math: We continue working on operations with decimals and fractions. We have reviewed steps for adding and subtracting with decimals with a focus on lining up place value. We have reviewed finding a common denominator and converting between mixed and improper fractions. As the week ends, we will begin working on multiplying fractions.
Literacy: We are learning the difference between summarizing and finding theme and will practice writing to show both skills using supporting details from the text.
Writing: We are researching a Revolutionary War battle or significant person. We will find information online and are focused on choosing reliable sources, pulling key details, recording facts in our own words, and citing our sources.
Science: We are learning how the movement of air masses can help us to predict weather. We will see how the direction, humidity, pressure and temperature of air can create different types of weather.
Social Studies: We are learning about how trade moved from within the colonies to intercontinental trade. We will learn about triangular trade routes and the introduction of slavery into the colonies.
