Due Dates: This week students will be wrapping up the publishing of their short fiction pieces. They have checklists that allow them to check for requirements of the writing unit. We will have publishing time in class through Friday. Anything not ready for printing at that time must be completed over the weekend and turned in by October 30th.
Last week students had time to complete a social studies project about the lost colony of Roanoke. Any unfinished work on the project was assigned as homework as of last Friday with a due date of this Wednesday, October 25th.
See below for rubrics/checklists for both assignments.

Make Up Work: A lot of our families have upcoming trips that require students to miss several days of school. Families have been great about letting me know ahead of time and asking for work.. I just wanted to let you know that I will often hold off on giving make up work to students until after they return. This is because planning for instruction and the actual pacing when you add students to the mix can vary. Some things are easy to send ahead of time, such as math sheets. Others can be more difficult, like reading, social studies and science, because discussion can push or pull the pace of a lesson. When students receive work after returning to class, school policy is that students have one day extension for every day absent, once they return and collect the work.
Halloween Party: Our party planning committee is working hard on preparations for our Halloween celebration. Be looking for something later this week to that let’s you know how you can contribute to the fun. A few reminders about costumes here at Coronado:
Here’s what we’re learning about right now:
Math: We will begin applying formulas for simple polygons (parallelograms and triangles) to find area of more complex shapes and composite figures.
Literacy: We will be wrapping up our character and theme unit with some writing about reading using planning strategies that help us to support a claim with evidence.
Writing: Students are putting the final touches on their narrative writing and focusing on transitions, and peer and individual editing/revising using a checklist.
Science: We will be applying our knowledge of matter, mixtures and solutions to a real world problem of water contamination.
Social Studies: We are learning about the first successful English settlement in what would become the continental US, Jamestown. We will be considering factors that led to the colony’s eventual success.

- Students will change into costumes in the afternoon and should not wear them to school. This includes makeup.
- No masks: faces need to be uncovered. School appropriate makeup is OK
- In choosing a costume for school, please be sensitive to the fact that we are an elementary school that includes very young children. Avoid anything too scary.
